A day of recognition, learning and appreciation at Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine (SMM)
On Friday, 7 August 2026, Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine (SMM) proudly hosted a Women’s Day celebration dedicated to recognising, appreciating and empowering the women who contribute meaningfully to the mine and its broader community.
The event was coordinated by Ms Davianne Snyders, SMM HR Manager (Mine Site), and approved by Mr Sechaba Letaba, SMM General Manager. With the generous support of Obsideo and Steenkampskraal Monazite Mine, the celebration provided the women of SMM with a memorable opportunity to connect, learn and be acknowledged for their important role in the workplace.
The program opened with an inspiring virtual address by Ms. Rika Cloete, Women in Mining (WIM) Chairperson for the Northern Cape. Her presentation encouraged reflection on the vital contribution of women in the mining industry and highlighted the importance of continued growth, mutual support and making full use of opportunities within the sector.
Following the session, participants took part in an informative tour of the mine, gaining first-hand insight into various areas of SMM’s operations. The tour began at the site laboratory and continued underground, where the group learned more about the underground mining environment and the work carried out below surface.
The visit continued to the surface area above the mine, including the location of the emergency exit from the underground workings, before concluding at the Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant. The tour was led by Mr. Pieter (Ouboet) Claassen, BMS Production Manager, together with Mr. Marsloo Klaaste, BMS Supervisor, who guided the group and shared valuable information about the different operational areas.
The educational tour offered participants an engaging opportunity to experience aspects of mining that may not form part of their daily responsibilities. The day was marked by enthusiasm, interaction and curiosity as the women explored the mine environment together.
After the tour, the women were treated to a braai prepared by the men on site. The gathering created a relaxed setting for colleagues to come together, enjoy a meal and celebrate the contribution of women at SMM.
In a thoughtful gesture of appreciation for the continued support of their colleagues, the women also distributed braai packs to employees who were unable to attend due to operational requirements. This act reflected the spirit of teamwork, gratitude and unity that characterized the celebration.
The lunch gathering was opened by Mr. Remondo van Wyk, SMM Employee Representative and RPM, who shared words of appreciation and led the group in prayer before the meal.
Above all, the celebration was a meaningful reminder of the value women bring to the mining industry and to the SMM team. The event created space for recognition, learning, fellowship and shared pride among colleagues.
